Where is San Angelo, Texas? We are about 100 miles due west of the center of the state.Population is about 100,000.Our airport is served by American and Continental.
What’s the weather like? Our most frequently asked question.Springtime weather can vary greatly. We’ve seen spring turkeys hunted in snow flurries and hundred-degree weather.Normally it is around 50 at daybreak and warms to 80 during the day.
What’s the terrain like?Mesquite savanna broken by low, stony cedar-covered hills with scattered stands of live oak trees and pecans along the river bottoms.Almost every plant that grows here has a thorn of some kind. Elevation changes 200-300 feet over a couple of miles.
How are the hunts conducted? We take you out before daylight and get you located near a roosting area. You hunt on your own.Hunters may pair up and hunt in tandem. This has proven to be very effective.Or you can hunt alone – it’s your choice.
How much area will I be hunting?A bunch.Hunters are scattered over lots and lots of square miles. Each hunter will have over a thousand acres or more to himself.
Is orange required?No.
What kind of camouflage is best?We see all kinds. And the turkeys don’t ever comment.
What about the meat?We have a great facility for processing birds. You are welcome to do your own or we’ll do it for you.We have tables, knives, hot and cold water, wrapping paper and ziplock bags, freezers – everything needed to process that bird of yours.
What if I want to get my turkey mounted? We can help arrange taxidermy here in San Angelo, but shipping a mounted turkey can get very expensive. The best choice is to freeze the whole bird and take him home with you. We’ll put the turkey into a pair of panty hose to protect those feathers. We provide a box for the frozen turkey to check like regular luggage. You can protect and insulate the frozen turkey with your hunting clothes, etc.
What about alcohol?Hunters provide their own alcoholic beverages. We have a refrigerator in camp for your beer and wine.We have ice, cokes, and 7 ups for mixed drinks.Anything more exotic, you will need to bring. We’ll stop at a liquor store on the way to camp. For the non-drinkers, we have plenty of soda pops in camp, plus candy, fruit and snacks.
Do you have a shooting range?Yes.We provide turkey-head targets and you are welcome to check the pattern on your shotgun.
Any special suggestions?Leather boots are best in this rocky, dry (normally) country. Those LaCrosse rubber boots make too much noise when you are walking in rocks.
What about rattlesnakes?Rattlesnakes are around for sure, but most of our hunters never see one. Those that do usually shoot them.Just be careful.Don’t step over a log or put your hand somewhere without looking first. And listen carefully for that distinctive sound as you are moving about. We have never had a hunter bit.In 40 years on this ranch, no one has yet been bit.
Should I wear snake chaps?Sure can, but they are awfully cumbersome and can get mighty hot.
Can I bring a non-hunting companion? We try to put a paying client into every bed, so there is no room for non-hunters.Motels are only twenty minutes away from the home camp – a bit farther to our other camps.Your guest is welcome to visit the camp anytime.
What about flying and bringing my gun? It’s done all the time and probably 80% of our hunters fly to San Angelo to hunt with us.Even following 9-11, it’s not a big deal.Just buy a good gun case, and don’t duct tape or lock any luggage until after the inspection at the airport.
How do I book a hunt? Just give us a call and we’ll look at our available open dates. When you pick the one you want, the hunt is booked. We’ll then send you our Booking Agreement. We get one-half down for a deposit. The balance is due on arrival.Don’t hesitate to call even after the season has started.Sometimes we have cancellations.
Are all hunters successful? No.Most hunters collect their limit of birds with us, but because there is significant skill required in the sport, some rookie hunters just don’t know how to call up a bird. And sometimes either the weather or the birds themselves will just not cooperate.
Do you have references?Yes, listed on this website.Contact us for even more.
Why does the Adobe Lodge get so much repeat business?Hunters tell us that once is just not enough. They have too much fun and see too many turkeys.
